Verifying Employees - Do it Right

By Hessar Nalartino

It is quite common in today's world for employers to perform background checks on current as well as potential employees. It is an easy process and makes good business sense. Employee background checks (on both current and potential) could expose them for the risk they may be to your company.

Think as a small business owner you are not responsible for the actions of your employees? Think again, there are laws on the books that basically say if your employee commits a crime against another one of your employees, even after company time, you could be held responsible. The law is on many books in the country, check with your state government to find out more.

Lawsuits are a serious problem for businesses and the last thing they need is having a person that they did not do their proper due diligence on sue them over something silly. Your business can essentially become bankrupt over such a lawsuit. You will want to know also if they have a history of suing employees or other people. All of these decisions could effect the bottom line of your company.

Lawsuits are simply not the only reason your company should perform background checks on potential employees. If the employee is dealing with children, in any kind of environment, a background check should be used. Also, if the person is driving a car for your company, you need to be careful as well.

Employers may also want to perform a background check simply to confirm the information that they have already given the employer. Employees are a very important part of a company's livelihood, having the right employees that will only help and not hurt your business will only help you sleep at night and save you money in the long run.
