Basics Of How Your Home Phone Works

By Tammy Simpson

We take our telephones - and the technology upon which they're designed - for granted. Without giving the process a second thought, we pick up the receiver, punch a few numbers (or, select a name), and expect to reach the other person. It matters little whether that person is located in the next town or halfway around the world. Consider that a century ago, it took a few weeks just to get a letter to someone and you'll appreciate how far we've come.

Many people still fail to realize how their phone calls are completed. Below, we'll explain the entire process, from the moment you lift the receiver to sending your voice to a recipient who may live across the globe.

Placing The Call

With a residential landline service, a connection exists between your line and your provider. The provider will maintain a central office and oversee a telephone exchange (sometimes called a switch) that is responsible for connecting calls. When you lift your receiver, you'll hear a dial tone. That tone signifies that the connection between your landline and your provider's exchange is live.

In the old days, most people had telephones with rotary dials. You would select numbers by "dialing" them. If you were you to listen in the receiver, you would have heard a series of clicking noises with each number dialed. Those were pulses. They interrupted the connection between your line and your provider's switch and in doing so, identified the phone number you wanted to call. Hardly anyone uses rotary dials today; most people now have telephones that have replaced pulse dialing with dual-tone multi-frequency dialing. The local switch identifies the desired phone number through the tones.

In order to route your call properly, the local switch needs to establish a connection between your landline and the line of the person you're calling. Long ago, operators would make these connections manually. They would unplug and plug wires into one of dozens of sockets in order to connect callers with each other. This responsibility is now handled automatically by computerized exchanges. However, the underlying principle (making connections between callers) is still at work.

Transmitting The Signal

Your receiver contains an internal diaphragm. When you speak, your voice creates vibrations in this diaphragm which in turn, converts the sound into electricity. As an electrical signal, it travels across the line until emerging through the recipient's earpiece speaker. As it emerges, the signal is converted back into sound (in this case, your voice). Telephone technology has evolved to the point that the entire process can happen in reverse simultaneously. That is, you and the person you've called can talk at the same time while the sound of your respective voices travel to the other person.

Telephony has expanded in ways that Alexander Graham Bell likely never predicted. By transmitting signals through fiber-optic cables, we can now enjoy long-distance and international calls with the same clarity and speed as local connections. Though most of us take the technology for granted, it has arguably changed the manner in which we live.

Learn To Set Up A Wireless Network In Your House

By Jonathan Carmichael

Wireless networking may sound like a nightmare to set up however if you have some basic information about the key parts and common errors you will have a much easier time setting up a stable network for your home PC and other devices. Below you will find a brief overview of everything you will need to know to create a wireless network at home quickly.

The most crucial component in any wireless home network is the access point, often referred to as an AP. Many consumer devices marketed as routers provide this functionality and much more, offering firewalls and web-based configuration interfaces, and it is usually easiest to purchase one of these.

When buying a router, pay particular attention to what versions of 802.11--the technical designation for the protocol WiFi devices speak--are supported. Whatever choice you make will almost certainly be compatible with all of your wireless devices, but you might enjoy extra efficiency by selecting a router that supports 802.11N if you know that one or more of your devices supports it.

Also, consider the range of each router you evaluate. A good choice should have enough range to provide coverage for your entire home and slightly beyond as to ensure that you'll rarely lose a signal.

Once the router is connected and installed, it is time to consider various aspects of wireless security. By default, most routers ship with no security enabled as to ease initial configuration. This not only means that anyone can connect to your network, but that anyone nearby can read most of your traffic, extracting passwords and other sensitive information.

Enabling your wireless security should be your main priority unless you are certain you want to share your connection. This will keep other people from using your network without a password that you provide and makes it much more difficult to farm your information.

There are a variety of security schemes from which to choose, more than can be discussed here. Whichever method you pick should be compatible with all computers and devices on your network. If in doubt, WiFi Protected Access or WPA is usually a safe and compatible choice.

Next you'll need to configure each computer and device to participate in your network. Steps for doing this vary based on operating system and device, though in general each follows a similar pattern.

First, instruct each wireless-capable device to connect to your network based on the network name your router provided. This is usually available either in its manual or within one of the first screens of the web configuration interface.

If your security is up and running the device you are, connecting will ask for a password and the method used. These will match the ones within the router. Barring any complications, your network connection should be set up in a matter of minutes.

Wireless internet access and networks are becoming more common and several resources are available that can help. Most routers now ship with enough information in the manuals to get even the most novice network administrator going.

Internet sites like Google are an invaluable tool for resolving networking issues, as there is a good chance someone else has already experienced and solved the same problems you might be having.

Personal GPS Trackers are a Life Saver

By Daniel Stouffer

You should never consider a trip into the wild country without one of the best personal GPS trackers in your backpack. Trekking always requires a great deal of preparation and common sense and whether you like it or not, you should always consider a worst-case scenario. If you are traveling alone, especially, you must understand that your journey could take you into areas which are very remote and far away from any quick help. Don't think that nothing will happen to you, as the age old Murphy's Law could dictate misfortune when you least expect it.

We have all heard the horror stories on our nightly news broadcasts. A hiker is lost in the backcountry, or a game hunter has not returned by his allotted time. When people realize that their loved ones are missing this can trigger a major search and rescue operation. Such an undertaking is, of course, very expensive and can be very stressful on all concerned. Why risk a situation like this arising " consider how personal GPS trackers could really benefit you.

Personal GPS trackers can truly be a lifesaver. They are great tools which work in virtually any situation. If you find that you are injured and incapacitated, all you need to do is to press the button and an emergency signal will be sent to the appropriate authorities for action.

Personal GPS trackers work by logging onto a satellite located in "low earth orbit" above you. As long as the satellite is basically above the horizon, your unit will be able to lock onto it and send its signal efficiently.

Personal GPS trackers are an essential, individualized security aide. They are highly versatile and efficient, logging your exact location, recording your whereabouts at all times and tracking your process every five minutes or so.

If and when you should ever become lost in the wilderness, especially in inclement weather or in the winter season, you should know that time can be of the very essence. Personal GPS trackers, when an emergency signal is activated, can help rescuers get to you as quickly as possible. Hopefully this will save you from having to endure a night in life-threatening conditions. Without the tracker, chances are that it would take many hours of searching to locate you.

Personal GPS trackers may soon be mandated as there is a movement to force those were trek into the wilderness to carry them. This legislation may well be enacted, as there is a considerable risk to search and rescue operations personnel, to say nothing of the cost involved during a search. Think of the potential risk you are enduring and weigh up how cost-effective these items are.

When you are worrying about packing your backpack and all the room necessary for your sleeping materials, first aid kit, clothing, firesticks and other survival aides, realize that personal GPS trackers are very compact and should be one of your first thoughts, not your last.

Give Yourself Peace of Mind By Using GPS For Kids

By Matt Meeano

Each year, tens of thousands of children go missing or are abducted. Their parents go crazy with worry about their children. We cannot imagine the horror that befalls a parent when learning that their child is not coming home that night. We might wonder "if only something could be done". Fortunately that something is using GPS to help keep track and locate your children.

GPS tracking systems can determine the location of the GPS device they are looking for anywhere in the world. Technology has developed to the point where the devices have gotten small enough to be placed in non-traditional objects. GPS devices can be placed in watches, clothing, shoes and cell phones among many other items.

The GPS tracking devices send constant signals to the GPS satellites in orbit. It is from these satellites that you can get the information you are looking for. The information is collected and presented at the provider's website. If you log into the website, within a few keystrokes you will be able to see where your child is and what they have been up to.

GPS for children devices are also small and are therefore perfect for keeping tabs on your small children. Your smallest children will run around and run off at the slightest notion despite your repeated insistences that they stay where you could see them. If you put the GPS device on your child, you can rest easy.

You will also need to rest easy because there are other people out there that want to abduct your child. These people could be as familiar as a relative involved in a custody battle or they could be a complete stranger with nefarious purposes.

Whether it is a loved one or someone who wants to harm your child, they will most likely not be aware of the GPS device that is hidden on your child. Since the device is placed in things such as shoes or jackets, they will never know it is there. And since they are unaware of the presence of the device, they will not think to remove it and this will allow you a better chance of being reunited with your child.

As you can see, using GPS tracking for kids can help you in more ways than you can imagine. The peace of mind these small electronic devices can give you is priceless.

Cell Phone Makers Lose Ground in 2009

By Waseem Afzal

Thanks to the enormous economic collapse of the past year, very few industries can claim to be unaffected by the decline in consumer confidence. Among the hardest hit industries have been the producers of cell phones and handset. Not only has decreased demand done a great deal of damage to these companies, but rising material costs have also presented many problems. Since the Sim free mobile phones are produced from components deriving from petroleum, increased oil prices have yielded the expected result of product costs have increased significantly throughout the year.

Over the past several months, the leader in cell phone sales has been Nokia. Nokia has recently reported a sixty-six percent decrease in profits. This stunning information also revealed that sales have dropped off by more than twenty-five percent from what it was during the same time the previous year. This is not a problem that only Nokia has experienced as its competitors such as Ericsson, Sanyo and Samsung are also experiencing very sharp declines.

The one bright spot on the books for Nokia was their sales of smart phones. According to the company, Nokia was able to expand it market share and sell more smart phones than ever. While the company expects the sales of smart phones to remain steady or even increase, they are not expecting a sudden rebound in sales of their traditional Sim free mobile phones. According to most expects, as long as the global recession continues, consumers will be willing to hold onto their old Sim free mobile phones rather than replacing them with a newer, flashier models.

Can customers expect special deals or price declines?

Due to the sharp drop off in sales, cell phone manufacturers are growing ever more desperate. The order of the day in a difficult economic environment is not market expansion, but rather simple survival. In fact, even the market leader, Nokia, abandoned plans it had to aggressively push for market expansion this year and settled on simply retaining its position as the leader of a wounded pack. While there is a price at which a Sim free mobile phone could not possibly be sold, prices will most likely continue to fall as the economic slowdown tightens its grip on the globe and product prices increase.

In an attempt to increase sales, even Nokia has been forced to cut the price of staple products like handsets. In fact, the average price of a Nokia handset was cut from $104 last year to just $88 this year. In spite of its lower price, Nokia still sold fifteen percent fewer devices this year than they did a year ago. But in a difficult economic environment, companies have no choice but to cut prices in a desperate attempt to keep sales volume stable, or nearly stable.

Makers of Sim mobile phones are also aware of the fact that the trend in mobile phone is going away from traditional cell phones and toward devices like the smartphone and Iphone that provide custom content. However, there are also know that their business still relies on sales of traditional mobile phones to keep them afloat.

From this point on, it can be difficult to predict the type of prices or deals customers can look forward to. It has become an economic reality that as long as the recession continues to unfold, mobile phone manufacturers will be required to reduce prices to deal with declining demand.

Catch the Crook with the Cyber Eye Camera

By Steve Thibeault

A wide variety of solutions are available on the market when it comes to capturing evidence of wrongdoing. There are almost as many products available as there are potential problems to address and with security issues continuing to plague the average homeowner these days, the need for cyber eye motion detection cameras is on the increase.

The cyber eye camera is a simple, yet powerful digital surveillance camera which takes pictures automatically and stores them within a non-volatile memory, meaning that they will not be lost should the unit's battery power fail.

Just imagine the different applications where you could use a cyber eye motion detection camera. If you suspect someone has been damaging your property at night, or spraying graffiti for example then you could set up the camera around your house and just wait for the offender. When he or she appears to do the dirty work, the camera will start to take pictures. It is activated by changes in the picture within the frame of vision and can be adjusted to take pictures from one to sixty second intervals.

A cyber eye camera will take images of whatever comes into its frame of vision, so you should be careful to place it in an area where, for example, your pet cat does not flit back-and-forth. The camera can be programmed to take up to 680 pictures, but you do not want glamor shots of your feline filling up the memory!

The cyber eye camera can collect valuable information to be passed on to law enforcement if you suspect wrongdoing. Each picture is automatically stamped with the time and the date and should you wish to view the images then just turn off the remote and connect it via the video input jacks to your TV or VCR. For further action, simply record the images to your VCR.

It doesn't matter if it is completely dark, the cyber eye camera can capture images of people up to 10 feet away, using an 8 mm lens and the infrared capability.

If you do not have the luxury of being able to use a security guard to monitor your property around the clock, some sort of surveillance camera is the next best thing. Whilst a multi-camera permanent video surveillance system is always best, a cyber eye cam can be very handy, especially as it can be moved from place to place wherever trouble is suspected.

When you have parked your car in the street in front of your house and you suspect that someone is causing damage to it, place the cyber eye camera within the vehicle and point it out of the window. Don't worry about the glass affect the quality of the image as you should get a clear picture of the offending criminal at his work.

Website Building Success Starts With The Needs Of Your Customers

By Rosario Townsend

So you are thinking about taking your business online or starting a money making website? It is a wonderful idea and it can be a profitable venture for you if you design your website the correct way. The best way to make your business profitable is to design a site that correctly targets your market in a unique way.

When you are in the planning stages of staring an internet business, aside from understanding the needs of your market, the first thing you want to take to heart is the way your website is designed. The cookie cutter approach does not work in all instances. You want your site to stand out as unique. This means you will have to learn how to build your own site or farm it out.

Should you turn this over to a professional website developer, be prepared to shell out some big bucks. It can cost anywhere from $1000 for a basic design upwards to $5000 or more. By learning to do it yourself, you can save a lot of money and learn a valuable skill.

So why should you consider doing it yourself? Well for starters, you will be able to create it the way you want it. This is important when you have a clear image in your mind as to how you want your site to look. If a professional does it for you, you will get a nice looking site but it may not be exactly what you wanted.

Website design skills are in big demand. This means that once you learn the basic skills, not only do you become a marketable asset, but you can design your own sites, make changes in the future, or create new websites that target other markets. It is a valuable skill to have.

When you are planning the look and fell of your site, always keep in mind that the customer or visitor is the most important thing. The site should not be about you, but about your customers. This means your website will address the needs, wants and desires of the customers by providing answers and solutions that will help them.

When you plan your site around the needs of your customers, they will automatically be attracted to you because you seem to positions yourself as a person who understands their needs. Many new site owners talk too much about themselves and never give much thought to what their visitors are really looking for. This is a big mistake and can costs you in the long run.

The best website design will always reach out to real people with real problems and offer solutions in a very understandable way. This is how you design a site that converts into sales. The sales can be generated from affiliate products, personal services, or your own information products.

As a rule of thumb, use the AIDA formula when you are planning out your site design and copy. The acronym AIDA stands for attention, interest, desire and action and should be the guiding principle for your success. You want your site to get a visitors attention, keep their interest, build a desire for your solution and get them to take action. This is how you succeed.

A Brief Treatise on Ring Tones

By Sam Roberts

This is a small article on one of the discoveries of the modern era the ring tone!

Some facts about the ring tone:

1. Ring tones are the sound made by any phone, whether mobile or fixed (land line), indicating that a call or message is being received by that instrument. The proper nomenclature should be 'ring sound' as in many cases there is no aspect of a 'tone' to it.

2. Modern receivers allow adjustments to the volume and offer many variations in the type of ring tone to allow differentiation between two or more instruments lying side by side and also suit customers specific requirements, such as for the hearing impaired.

3. The first telephones had a bell which made a 'ring'ing sound when struck by a hammer, operating electromagnetically, to announce a call. While this system is still common, most cell phones and modern land line phones have advanced from the ring to producing different kinds of sounds.

4. Research had shown that a single long ring to indicate an incoming call usually meant the person would wait for the instrument to stop ringing before picking it up. For this reason the ring - pause - ring system evolved. Of course now, melody based ring tones play the whole snippet of a song so the pause doesn't apply.

5. Towards the late 1980s mechanical ring tones were slowly getting replaced by electronic ones progressing from single tones to those playing two, three or more tones and then on to melodies.

6. Customised ring tones on mobile phones started off in 1996 with Japanese manufacturers offering a number of options, both customised and pre-recorded.

7. Downloadable ring tones were available from 1998 and this service has now become an enormously successful industry right across the globe.

8. There are generally 3 types of ring tones. The monophonic tone has a single musical note played, one at a time. Polyphonic ones have several notes played together as in the MIDI format. The Truetone or audio recording is the latest development and is the format used in MP3.

9. Real tones, which are usually taken from popular songs, began to be distributed from late in 2002.

10. The vibrating alert can be considered as an alternative to the ring tone and performs the same functions where too much or too little noise is a factor.

11. Some of the more common formats used for ring tones include MIDI, iMelody, MP3, RTTTL and Nokia Smart Messaging.

12. It is now possible to use a ring tone maker to customise the ring tone using a particular portion of a favourite song or melody and send the file to the phone via email, sms or cable.

13. A karaoke type of sing tone option seems to be the latest innovation that is likely to make it big.

This seemingly most mundane of 'inventions' is now a multi billion dollar industry and is in the process of evolving very fast. Let's see where it takes us!

Tips For Improving Your Broadband Connection Speed

By Brian Johansen

Having a fast online connection is becoming less of a luxury. Websites are using more advanced technologies and platforms from which to deliver content. In a text-based world, a dial-up modem might suffice. However, large videos, games, and space-intensive documents require a larger pipe and faster transmission.

While those who subscribe to DSL and cable services enjoy quick surfing and downloading, there are tactics that can further increase their throughput. In this article, we'll provide three useful tips for improving your broadband connection speed.

Tip 1- Use A Web Accelerator

Internet download accelerators automate many of the system tweaks you would otherwise perform manually. For example, they might make changes to your computer's registry or browser, maintain a fresh cache of specific content that you access regularly, and even compress documents. Some web accelerators will filter out third-party ads, optimize a web page's underlying HTML, and resolve domain names linked in a document. Each of these actions can incrementally improve the speed with which you surf online.

Tip 2 - Lower Your Latency

Whenever data is transmitted from one point to another, there is a fractional time delay. The greater the delay, the slower the transmission of data. Your computer is configured with a default latency represented by a request buffer. If you increase that buffer, you can lower your local area network's latency and thereby, increase the rate of data transmission. There is one important factor to keep in mind: in order to increase your computer's default request buffer, you must have a sufficient level of memory available.

Tip 3 - Modify The Registry

Most people don't realize there is a Registry in their Windows machine that performs a seemingly endless number of functions. One of those functions influences your broadband connection. There are a number of configured protocols that you can modify which can potentially improve your online access speed.

For example, the Maximum Transmission Unit (MTU) controls packet size. If you increase the MTU, you can reduce the number of packets your computer transmits. The Maximum Segment Size (MSS) is similar to the MTU; it represents the packet size that can be received by your computer. Again, the larger the packet, the fewer packets that must be transmitted.

Increasing Your Broadband Speed Organically

There are software packages you can purchase that can incrementally improve your online access speed. You can also replace certain hardware (for example, your processor) for a mild boost. However, before you invest in such software or hardware, try the speed tweaks described above. You can find a number of robust web accelerators online. Plus, you can perform the latency and Registry modifications for free.

A quick aside: the tweaks in this article are not guaranteed to improve your broadband connection's throughput rate. There are many variables involved and it is impossible to predict the effectiveness of each tweak without a thorough examination of your computer. That said, the suggestions above are a fantastic place to start.

Need A Reasonably Priced Touch Screen Phone

By Cathy L. Kimble

There are a multitude of touch screen phones available. One of the most popular touch screen phones is the iPhone. While it is sought after by many people, it isn't very affordable. Others would like an equally capable touch screen phone but at a reasonable price. With this in mind many cell phone companies have put out more affordable touch screen phones. One such phone is the enV Touch from Verizon Wireless. While the phone may be missing some key functions it is still a worthwhile affordable iPhone alternative.

The enV Touch has a unique design. It is a slide phone with two screens but they are both the same size. They are large and can display a whopping 1.6 million colors. This allows the screen to project beautiful images and content will appear very nice looking. There is an alphanumeric key pad displayed on the face screen which can be used for dialing numbers or sending out text messages. The touch screen works well but can be hard to get used to at times. To help with this problem there is an option for a vibration or noise alert. Whenever the phone registers a correct touch on the touch screen it can either vibrate or let out a noise. Inside the flip compartment is the full QWERTY key board. The key board is very spacious and the keys are individually raised and separated. Using the full QWERTY key pad was very comfortable.

Despite the lack of V Cast Mobile TV and Wi-Fi the LG enV Touch has an impressive list of features. One of the more interesting features is the drawing pad. You can draw a picture on the screen using your finger. You are then able to save the picture and send it to anyone in your contacts list. The phone also features a USB port which makes storing data incredibly easy. The enV Touch also has a full HTML web browser. Using the touch screen can be quite annoying at times because the touch screen functions don't work so well during web browsing.

The camera on this phone takes very nice photos. It features a 3.2 megapixel lens. There are a multitude of image control options such as six different resolutions, five white balance presets, three focusing modes, and much more. One of the more notable features is called Facial Makeover mode which removes all the unsightly marks and blemishes such as pimples from a persons face while taking a picture.

This phone features an amazing call quality. There is little to no interference or static during conversations. Also people on the other line will sound very clear. Similarly the speakerphone works just as well too. The caller will not sound too loud and distorted over the enV's speaker phone.

The LG enV Touch from Verizon wireless is a good phone. It may be lacking some obvious features and its touch screen can take a while to get accustom to, but the rest of the phones features and great functions more than make up for it. Anyone looking for an affordable phone which ignorable quirks should look no further than this one.

Ring Tones - Yeh Dil Maange More

By Sam Roberts

The words in the Pepsi advertisement jingle compiled for the Indian audience, literally translating to "the heart wants more" and most everyone's craze for new and varied ring tones are a perfect match. With the number of cell phone connections sky rocketing in India and the rest of the world, this is one craze that has very little chance of ebbing away. Not that I am one to complain, especially if the tune is one of Kishore Kumar's evergreen melodies! But I'd draw the line at some of the more bizarre tunes or so called tunes, like a baby crying or the sound of a 'fart' that some individuals insist on assaulting our eardrums with.

Some basic points about the ring tone:

1. It is the name given to the sound made by any kind of telephone, not just mobile phones, to announce an incoming call or text message. Most of these sounds, especially those that do not have a tune or are not customised, are not tones at all and should actually be called ring sounds.

2. The first telephones had a bell which made a 'ring'ing sound when struck by a hammer, operating electromagnetically, to announce a call. While this system is still common, most cell phones and modern land line phones have advanced from the ring to producing different kinds of sounds.

3. While receivers nowadays allow adjustments to the volume, there are many variations on offer regarding the type of ring tone - to allow differentiation between two or more instruments lying side by side. Specific customer requirements are also covered, such as for the hearing impaired.

4. Towards the late 1980s mechanical ring tones were slowly getting replaced by electronic ones progressing from single tones to those playing two, three or more tones and then on to melodies.

5. 1996 saw the advent of the customised ring tones on mobile phones, with some Japanese manufacturers offering a number of options, both customised and pre-recorded.

6. Downloadable ring tones were available from 1998 and this service has now become an enormously successful industry right across the globe.

7. Real tones, which are usually taken from popular songs, began to be distributed from late in 2002.

All the new music being generated by bands, composers, films, etc. number in the hundreds of thousands across the world. Marketing these as ring tones before or at the time of launch allows the tune to become popular and improve the prospects of it becoming a 'hit'. Ring tones are now available online, can be sent via sms or copied from a DVD or CD. A number of sites specialise in bringing the latest offerings to the consumer, sometimes the second it's out of the recording studio. There is a huge amount of financial turnover in this business, running into billions of dollars, because everyone would love to have only the latest and the best. Since I am no different from most others and want options for everything, my heart to get to have more . ring tones!

Getting a Peek And Upgrade To Pronto For Free

By Jacob H. Conner

That depends. For me, Yes.

I had cell phone plans before and I did not like it. It was nice to stay connected but in the end it was not worth it. Also, I hated talking on the phone. Yeah, I know some of you might be wondering, "What is he crazy?" No, I am perfectly sane. I can't be bothered by idle chit-chat. It's not my thing. I went from a plans, to pre-paid, and now I'm settled with the Peek Pronto. So far, I works great for me.

Can it be better? Sure, and I will get into that later.

I bought my Peek for $20 at Target and purchased an upgrade cable online. From there, I upgraded my Peek to Peek Pronto for free. Here is what you do: At the bottom of the box, you will see a version number. If you see version "1.09" you will not be able to get a free upgrade. If you see 1.04 through to 1.08, you can upgrade your Peek to "Pronto" for free.

They sell the Peek preloaded with "Pronto" for over $50. It is cheaper to buy the Peek and upgrade for free (with cable, another $15). The Peek was also available at Radioshack for a higher price at $70. None of that, I save $50 thank you.

Now some of you may be confused about this technical jargon. Let me explain. The hardware is the same but the sofeware is different. I believe the only difference from the original Peek is a slightly upgraded keypad. "Pronto" is the software that you pay extra for if you want it preloaded out of the box.

Also guys, you have to buy the upgraded cable online from their store. I tried going to Radioshack and got a USB to micro-USB and it did not work. The special cable has a "doohickey" on the USB computer side that changes the signal via parrallel and NOT traditional USB. To put it simply, order the special cable online. It will save you headaches.

The Peek is a simple email device that uses of the T-Mobile network to send and receive emails its clients emails. There is no wi-fi you have to worry about. It works where T-Mobile works. The Pronto software is a little faster and it has some better features such as a 4 digit password lock and "Push". The Push is a system where Peek automatically pushes your email from the server to your peek as soon as it gets it. So you would get your new emails quicker. The Performance was okay, 4 minutes average to received email. Hopefully they will speed it up later on. I tested this with my brother's Peek. Real world, real time test. Before the upgrade, it would take more than 10 minutes.

The software is solid and there is only 1 known bug. It will keep blinking when you read your mail on powersave mode. They are working on a fix. The volume is very low. Even on high. If you are expecting urgent mail, quite often you will realize you got it a while ago simply because you didn't hear, and/or feel it vibrate.

You can only view email is text format. No html. That's fine with me. I do hear people complaining about unformatted html tags. You can have multiple accounts but there are no seperate folders at the moment to sort your accounts. They all go into your inbox. Even SPAM! I made sure I used my clean gmail account so I don't get spam. I can imagine how your inbox can get cluttered fast. Hopefully the people at Peek will come up with a workaround.

The battery last a long time in my testing. I went 3 full days before I had to recharge. I hear some people get 5 days which is pretty damn good.

Efax Review - What You Need to Know

By Santos Frazier

Introduction:

With the coming of digital faxing, the entire scenario in fax transmission technology has changed. High speed Internet faxing is a reality now, and has introduced many changes in the way a business organization communicates with others, speeding up the work-flow to a great extent. It is a paperless world today, and digital faxing technology has done away with fax machines and printed paper, making an organization more efficient.

Internet faxing does not require a great deal of skill, and you need not have any special knowledge to use the service. Internet faxing enables you to receive and send faxes over the Internet. The faxes that you send are first converted into digital formats and then transmitted to the concerned people, who receive the fax as an attachment to his email or in the body of the email itself.

Internet faxing has quite a few attractive advantages which include -

Lower costs. Reliability in service. Mobility and Accessibility. Easy management.

The traditional fax machines (analog) that we know of have many disadvantages associated with them. These machines often have paper jamming problems, telephone line disturbances, phone line costs, fax machine maintenance cost, paper and printing cost, and more. Internet faxing does away with all that guarantees a smoother and clearer transmission.

To find the most suited solution regarding Fax sending, it is worthwhile doing a little research.

Where to find Internet fax software and services?

If you search the Internet, you would find several service providers offering Internet faxing. You may find services which are free with a condition that the front page of the fax received would have an ad from the sponsors.

There are various such services available and most of these service providers offer you with 30 days trials, during which time you can test drive each of the services and select one for your continued use.

You may also come across free fax services as you browse the Internet, but these services are not suitable if you are looking for faxing for business purposes. These services have limited capabilities and do not provide the enhanced features as required by business organizations.

In providing you with a free faxing facility the service providers would have their sponsors ads displayed on the front page of the fax transmission received which is really not suitable in a business environment. Furthemore, free fax services do not guarantee immediate delivery of your faxes, which could have an adverse effect on your business.

How does it work?

Internet fax services are accessible from any computer anywhere in the world. The computer must have the access to the Internet. All you need to do is log-in to your account and start using the fax service. You can open your email inbox to find if any faxes are lying there for you.

Internet fax services also provide you with information about the status of the fax that you have already sent. It would inform you if the fax has been delivered and at what time. If the delivery is unsuccessful the service would let you know, mentioning the reason why it was not delivered. Further, if the fax you sent is waiting in the queue, you would be informed regarding its status.

The fax received is usually delivered to you in the form of an email attachment, and also could also be delivered to a G3 fax machine after converting the digital fax data into a G3 fax format. There are some distinct characteristics offered by Internet faxing and these include:

Sending of faxes. Routing incoming faxes. Filing of sent faxes.

There are two stages involved in Internet faxing and these are:

Negotiation:

This takes place in order to determine whether the sent fax can be delivered to the said destination.

Delivery confirmation:

As and when the fax is delivered the system awaits to ascertain that the recipient has received the document and it has been processed.

The detailed status of the transmission is also made available to you as a sender of the fax, and also all the error message report, if any, would be generated for your knowledge.

Summary:

Internet faxing utilizes digital faxing technology to receive and send faxes. It is also known as "online faxing" which is the general term used for sending and receiving faxes over the Internet. Internet faxing provides cost benefit to the user eliminating expensive fax machines and introducing paperless communication, integrated with email.

The Beginner's Guide To How DSL Works

By Tammy Lawsone

Most DSL subscribers don't know - and likely won't care - how the technology works. That said, it's worth spending a few minutes to explore the type of equipment involved and how it contributes to delivering fast internet access. Below, we'll take a quick tour through the technology and follow the transmission of data as it makes its way from a server to your computer.

What Is POTS?

A digital subscriber line uses an antiquated infrastructure called POTS, an acronym for "Plain Old Telephone Service." POTS sends and receives voice data through analog signals. These signals travel along the copper wires through a jumble of switches, transmitters, and other equipment. It does so at a frequency of 3400 Hertz.

The key that allows DSL to work on the same infrastructure as your telephone is that the 3400 Hertz frequency range is only what is available for voice data. In reality, the true range of frequencies available on the copper wire is far greater. The extra "space" is what supports the transmission of digital - or non-voice - data (i.e. web pages, video, etc.).

Frequencies And Channels

The digital information is transmitted through the DMT or CAP systems. If it goes through DMT (or, Discrete Multi-tone), the information is split into 247 different channels. If it goes through CAP (or, Carrierless Amplitude/Phase), the information is split across three different frequencies, depending upon the intent. One of those frequencies is specifically for voice data. Another is for moving packets from the customer to a server. The last of the three is allocated for packets traveling from a server to a customer's computer.

Additional Equipment Needed

In order for DSL to work, the connection must have access to two more pieces of equipment. The first is the modem or transceiver. It is located at the customer's residence and functions as the liaison between the user's computer, or local area network, and the digital subscriber line.

The second piece of equipment is the digital subscriber line access multiplexer (more commonly called the DSLAM). The DSLAM is located at the provider's central hub. Its function is to aggregate all of the signals produced or triggered by the provider's customers into a single pipe. That pipe forms the online connection. The DSLAM can also perform the duties of a router as well as handle the assignment of IP addresses to customers.

The DSLAM represents the difference between a DSL connection and cable access. Even though it aggregates all customer data into one pipe, it maintains an exclusive connection for each. Contrast that to a cable connection in which the rate of data transmission is reduced each time a new user joins the network.

Even though DSL uses an older technological infrastructure, many subscribers consider the experience of using it superior to newer technologies.

How GPS Work

By Eric Dashal

Have you in reality committed serious thought to the incredible benefits which owning an auto navigation system will provide for your entire life as well as your travels? The truth of the matter is that the more complex systems on the market today give a lot more than just basic instructions from A to B. Modern navigation devices are your best bet when it comes to finding points of interest, restaurants, fueling stops, and places to sleep along the way.

If you haven't given it too much consideration, maybe learning a little more about the way a navigation system really works will provide you a few things to think about when you finally think about the effect which a device such as this can make within your life. The one thing to keep in mind is that not every GPS or auto navigation device is the same. There are different manners of development accompanied by varied methods of functionality and design however they all function on rather alike rules.

GPS systems utilize artificial satellites that orbit the earth in order to send digital signals which are intercepted by your GPS tool. The system has software that translates that signal and utilizes the data in order to form conclusions about the current location based on the amount of time that it required to capture that signal from the orbiting satellite, and the exact location of the satellite that sent the information. Through joining this data a determination can be drawn by the GPS or auto navigation system as to the exact position of the GPS system. Three artificial satellites are utilized to ascertain the area of intersection and a fourth satellite insures the accuracy of the information.

Auto navigation systems are a lot more sophisticated and much more useable than those first military GPS devices which were used. You may not just receive instructions to guide you on your journey, to compensate for route changes, and move you back on the right road after a wrong turn, although you would additionally receive info on nearby destinations, eating houses, motels, gas stations, and a couple other points of interest along the way. A good many auto navigation systems have enhancement options which permit you to buy a subscription, that would give you updated data about traffic, weather, and construction along your route. The subscription costs for those services might be a turn off for the regular driver, however will prove invaluable to those who rely on correct instructions as well as being prompt when traveling constantly for work.

Ensure that whenever you purchase a GPS or auto navigation system that the device which you buy isn't just completely upgradeable but also easily upgraded. It does no good to own a device which has the ability to be upgraded if you cannot figure out how to upgrade it. Many of such devices can be upgraded by using something as basic as a Compact Disc or Digital Video Disc to provide the information and upgrades. If you can't enhance the device it will become obsolete in time since additional roadways are constantly being made and old roadways are many times shut down for construction as well as repairs. If you don't possess the newest information on roads you are essentially driving just as haphazardly as you'd be without an auto navigation system.

Are you searching for bluetooth headset deals? Are you even sure that what you're looking at IS that great of a deal? Here are some things to take into account when thinking of buying a bluetooth headset.

Comfort - Basically, there are two kinds of bluetooth headsets; the kind that have a loop that goes around your ear, and the kind that sort of plugs right in your ear. The headsets that have the loop may provide more comfort, but they aren't nearly as secure as the earplug kind, due to the fact that they often slip. If you see a person walking down the street with one hand up over an ear to hold the headset, you will know they have this kind. They probably think that their purchases were super bluetooth headset deals, but it kind of defeats the purpose of getting a deal when you're using your hand to hold the headset up to your ear.

Connectivity and ease of use - If sitting at your desk while you use the bluetooth headset is something you do often, then quick phone or mp3 connectivity might not be very important as far as features are concerned. However, if you find yourself behind the wheel driving while speaking on your phone, you may find that spending that extra money for phone connectivity will provide you with quick and easy access to disconnect and connect the phone.

Battery Life - When you're looking for bluetooth headset deals, make sure that you take into account the amount of time you will actually use the bluetooth headset. Maximum battery capability will not be required if you simply use the headset while en route from your office to your home, for instance, a construction site foreman will need to constantly be in touch with many other job sites.

Clarity - Consider when and where you'll be using your bluetooth headset. Will you be in a quiet office setting majority of the time? Or instead will you be in your car at long lengths of time and be able to cut out most, but not all, of the surrounding traffic noises? Or will you be that job foreman on a construction site, who will most likely need special features or filters to enable you to hear better? Inquire about noise cancellation technology and echo reduction mechanisms if background noise will be one of your major concerns.

Distance - You can not only connect your cell phone to your bluetooth headset, but also your mp3 portable device. Since these devices operate using a fairly low frequency, take into account how much distance is between the bluetooth headset and whatever device it is that you want to connect it to. If you usually keep your phone at your desk when you move through your building, you might need to purchase a more advanced unit that has more antenna power.

Taking all of these factors into consideration when looking for the best bluetooth headset deals will help you make the best choice for YOU, and get the most value for your dollar.

Discovering The Mystery Behind Wifi Cell Phones

By Dirk Gloeckner

Often, many perceive the idea surrounding a wifi cell phones as a way to access the Internet. These misconceptions are understandable, considering the name of the phone. With anything, it's always a good idea to have some knowledge about the device you are using.

Cell-Internet phone and cell-Internet phone are two other names that reference to a phone with wifi capabilities. A cellular repeater works along side the wifi LAN. This is what also gives the cell phone different modes, which range between conventional and wifi VoIP.

The switch between regular types of cell phone to wifi, automatically happens. This happens in order to prevent the phone from experiencing periods of dropout. Generally, people would experience this, as a result of their cell phones inability to maintain contact with the repeater, as explained earlier

Some areas especially increase the possibility of losing calls and experiences of interference. One of the types are concrete buildings or those made of steel, which may act to hinder radio frequencies. Another type of potential problems involves areas, densely populated, such as urban areas.

Phones with the ability to have access to wifi, usually have more range before dropping calls. Conventional cellular phones have set ranges before calls are dropped. As a person starts to strain these limits, they come closer to losing their calls. Any indication of low connection signals, easily results in the loss of the call.

If it so happens the person comes into an area with wifi access when close to losing the call, the call switches off. No longer does the call remain on the conventional line, but rather becomes part of the wifi LAN. Additionally, the person has VOiP, which keeps the call continuous and without loss.

Transfers between networks happen without effort. As long as wifi LAN exists within range of the phone, the customer does not have to worry. This way the calls are kept without worry of dropout.

Many places have the service free and it comes with other benefits as well. You don't have to worry about paying for the calls made on a wifi access. The only time you would have to pay is if the service requires it. This is a nice feature for someone who uses their phone a lot of minutes.
