Portable GPS Fish Finders

Brief Explanation and History of Fish finders: Fish finders are basically a type of SONAR (sound navigation and ranging). Fish finders use active (rather than passive which does not produce the sound) sonar to detect fish. Fish finders also detect the bottom of the ocean or lake, and everything else that reflects the sound beam.

When fish are not biting, usually the thing that is required before fish bite again is patience unless if the bait is not the right choice. Patience may not pay off as some anglers are not willing to or do not have enough time to wait for many hours before any potential for results to come through.

Fish finders get their origins from fathometers. Modern fathometers (meaning fathom plus meter) are designed specifically to show depth and usually only have a digital display. Early fathometers were comprised of a flashing rotating light at the edge of a circle.

Any avid angler has multiple fishing rods and bait. What more does an angler need to catch fish? Bobbers, tackle box, and other tools inside the tackle box for fishing is what most people would be quick to answer. One thing that could be added for an angler is a portable fish finder to locate fish. Normally an angler needs to guess where fish may be located and where they might bite. When fishing on lakes and bays, the portable fish finder locates fish like a global positioning system locates places. For those who fish at lake cabins on a boat or a dock, a portable fish finder is a must-have to.

Fish finders are the best tool to use so you can find and place your boat on top of the fish. All fish finders use sonar to scan the water. A sound wave is sent from the fish finder through the water forming a cone. When an object is detected, the fish finder measures the amount of time between when the sound wave was sent and when it bounced back to the unit and is displayed on the screen.

The various types of wireless fish finders are rod mount, wrist mount or stand alone. As the names suggest, you can either mount them on a rod, or wear it on your wrist like a watch. You can get the stand alone ones as well, that closely resembles the classic fish finders. With all these varieties and their great uses, fishing has become a great experience. Wireless fish finders can help you locate a spot with fishes accurately, without even having to move your boat a bit, and improve your chances of catching your favorite fishes.
