LCD TV vs Plasma TV - And The Winner Is...

LCD and Plasma TVs can look a lot alike but their technologies are a lot different. And as the deadline is approaching quickly for the networks to change their broadcast to HD, it is truly the time to begin thinking seriously about replacing your old TV that has that cathode ray tube. Do you need to know which of the new technology of TVs is right for you and what the difference between them is?

Take a whole bunch of real small gas plasma cells and give them a precise charge of electrical voltage and this gives you the picture on the Plasma screen, now with the LCD screen the picture is produced using liquid crystals that are placed in the middle of two plates of glass. There advantages and disadvantages to each kind of TV, which we will try to cover below.

There are differing opinions on the quality of the picture so it is easier for you to just go to your electronics store near you and view the pictures yourself so that you can compare. When the Plasmas first came out they did the best job as far as contrast, but with all the advances that have been achieved this is not so true today with the Plasmas and LCDs.

The one problem with LCDs has always been that with side viewing the color varies, whereas the Plasma TVs do not have this problem and have always been good. But recently strides have been made to improve the LCDs in this area and it has been successful. Just make sure to view the new flat screens for yourself before buying.

LCDs have reportedly had issues with rapidly moving images becoming blurred. This problem has been worked and corrected too to a certain extent. Make sure you pay attention to the refresh rate. The way this rating goes the lower numbers are better quality as far as viewing rapidly moving segments. Be certain to purchase a refresh rate below 16ms to get the best quality. The high end models today are more towards the 12ms range in fact.

LCD TVs usually do better with higher resolution and can be much sharper than the Plasmas as far as viewing images with the 1080i/p high resolution. Plasma screens can be scratched quite easily and have to have a layer of glass to protect them. This makes the Plasma TVs heavier and can also create glare if you have too much light coming in for a lot of windows.

When Plasmas first came out they only lasted about 20,000 hours at full brightness. The LCDs on the other hand are guaranteed for around 60,000 hours and always have been. The newer Plasmas have been improved and now they last from 50,000 - 60,000 like the LCD ones do.

Plasmas cost less as far as the larger of the screen sizes and have a slight better side viewing picture quality. The Plasma also comes out ahead as far as dealing with fast moving imagery. Both the LCD and Plasma last just about the same time. LCDs are thinner, lighter and not quite as fragile as what the Plasmas are. Brightness and contrast are supposedly better in the Plasma, according to some but others say that the LCDs have the same quality, but it does boil down to the what make and which model you view.
