The actual place and time when the game we know as hockey actually originated will never be known. We can be very certain of this since the definition of hockey is very uncertain. Many would say that any game played wearing skates and using a stick or club to hit a ball or other object was in fact a type of ice hockey. Others will argue that this is not the game of hockey unless played between two teams and governed by a set of rules.
Games similar to ice hockey are known to have been played in Europe in the 16th century and may have taken place even earlier. A well know painting by Bruegel dated about 1565 shows skaters with curved sticks playing a game with one player about to hit an item on the ice. Early skates were made from bone but iron blades are known to have been in use in the 1500s.
The concept of an organised game on ice most likely began in North America in the late 1700s. Some form of the game of ice hockey was played in Newfoundland at about that time. Windsor,Nova Scotia and Dartmouth Nova Scotia are also other early places where hockey in at least a primitive form was played as early as 1827. It is noteworthy that Canada's first skate manufacturers were the Starr Manufacturing Company in Dartmouth.
The city of Montreal claims to be the site of the first well documented ice hockey game played between two teams with known members and with a recorded score. This claim is supported by the International Ice Hockey Federation. This game took place at the Victoria Ice Rink in Montreal on 3rd March 1875. The records do not show any earlier hockey games than this one with a recorded score. At the same venue another game followed this one two weeks later.
In February 1877 written rules for the game of ice hockey were published and in the same year the McGill Hockey Club began in Montreal. Another milestone in the history of hockey was the formation of the Amateur Hockey Association of Canada in the city of Montreal in 1886.
The problem of the real origin of hockey is still discussed at present. A definition of hockey, meant to include early forms of the game, has been offered by the Society for International Hockey Research. They define hockey as any game played between two teams of skaters, using curved sticks to drive a small disc, ball or other small object into or through the opposing goal.
