In the good old days mobile phones were bricks and the extent of their functionality was to make or receive calls. However with the fast move pace of technology and the growing needs of consumers mobile phones have evolved into smart phones. These phones are faster, more powerful, and laden with tons of added features. When smart phones and PDAs are under consideration, one of the first names that should be considered is Palm, Inc
Founded in Sunnyvale, California back in 1992 by Jeff Hawkins Palm, like most manufacturers, started with a single product, the Zoomer. This then later evolved into various other models and was followed by an acquisition by U.S Robotics in 1995 then in 1997 became a subsidiary of 3Com. Over the following years Palm became one of the biggest players within the business sector of Smartphones however they only ever had limited success within the consumer market. In recent years Palm have also lost ground to the likes of Microsoft, Blackberry and Apple and have been in desperate need for something to revitalize the company. Palms answer to this problem is the Palm Pre
The Palm Pre is an all singing all dancing Smartphone that is predicted to rustle a few feathers of all of its competitors. The Pre is a slider with the 3.1 inch touch screen and a full QWERTY keypad. It weighs in at a respectfully light 4.6 ounces, and is a little more than half an inch thick. The Pre has a full array of connectivity including Bluetooth, USB, WiFi, and CDMA. A GSM model will also be released. Palm have also scraped the old PalmOS in favour of a brand new proprietary webOS which is based on a Linux core with a web standards based graphical user interface (GUI). The phone also comes with 8GB of internal memory and a 3 mega pixel digital camera with LED flash
The Palm is also capable of handling multitasking with ease due to its Texas Instruments OMAP3 Arm Cortex-A8 processor which is supposed to be 3 times the speed of the iPhone and current gen Nokia Smartphones. The device makes use of the cloud based services and synchs your contacts from Google, Facebook and Outlook all into one, effectively stringing together your work and social lives. It also has plenty of storage with 8GB of internal storage.
The Palm Pre has won several awards including the hottest product at the Consumer Electronics Show that was held in Las Vegas in January 2009. While an exact date of its release has not been confirmed Palm has announced it will be released in the first half of 2009 and many people are expecting this will be June. Sprint Nextel has gained the exclusive rights to distribute this powerful and innovative smart phone.
What about the United Kingdom and the rest of Europe? Fortunately for those in the UK, Vodafone has been undergoing negotiations with Palm regarding the exclusive distribution of the smart phone for Brits and for Spain and Germany as well. Softpedia reports that Vodafone may soon be the only network in the UK to provide subscribers with the Palm Pre within the first three months of its release.
