Locate Cell Phone Owner - How to Find People By Phone Number

By Jonathan Templeton

Have you ever gotten a call that you missed but you weren't sure who was on the other end of the line? Maybe it's someone else's phone you're looking at - your spouse's or your child's? You can see the number but for whatever reason, you can't call them back, but you need to know who that caller is.

In the old days, if the person on the other end was using a cell phone, there was no way for you to find out who it was. It was pretty much impossible to trace cell phone numbers back then because there was no big phone company database of all the cellphone numbers out there. And there still isn't. Cell phone companies have always looked at cellphones as being private lines and kept them unlisted.

Seeing that this was a problem, some really bright people decided to take matters into their own hands and make their own databases. After a lot of hard work over several years they built huge databases of cell phone numbers and other unlisted numbers. When that work was done, they created websites and made those databases accessible to anyone with an internet connection.

Now that all that work is done, we can trace cell phone numbers rather easily all on our own. You just direct your web browser to one of the reverse cell phone lookup sites, put in the number and wait for the results. But this is where it can get a little sticky for the user.

Since this is such a huge need for people, a lot of companies have built websites for reverse lookups. In fact there are so many of them that it can be somewhat difficult to know which ones are good to use. Let me give you some pointers on what you should be looking for:

Are there a lot of positive comments out there about them? As you stumble across blogs, review sites, etc. do you see good news about their services? Any ripoff reports out there? If most of the news is good, you're probably looking at a decent site.

Do they claim to be free? Generally speaking, there's no free site out there that will look up a cell phone number and not charge you for it. They might look up a landline for free, but to get a cell number or an unlisted number you'll have to use a paid site. These companies went to a huge expense to make these databases available and they charge reasonable rates to re-coup their costs.

Can you check the database before paying? Do not make the mistake of paying for a reverse directory service and then finding out that the first number you want to look up isn't even in their database. That can and does happen every day. Instead, make sure that they will let you check and see if they have names for numbers you're going to lookup before you actually spend any money.
