Helmet Cameras Extremely Useful

By Fiona Fidelis

The use of helmet cameras is increasing, especially in sports TV broadcasting. Helmet cams are tiny video cameras, usually mounted on a helmet, that provide viewers with the wearers point of view. Helmet cameras are fantastic little devices, and they stand up to a lot of punishment. They have many different uses, thanks to their versatility.

The best part about helmet cams is that they are very rugged and weatherproof; a lot of them are even waterproof and can shoot underwater. And, even though they are built to be very durable and last a long time, theyre still portable and lightweight. This makes them great for a lot of different purposes, from scuba diving to riding around in a field of mud on an ATV.

Of course the biggest users of helmet cams are TV broadcasters in sports. Even the Canadian Olympic ski team uses helmet cameras. Theyre great because they not only give viewers at home the opportunity to see what the athlete sees, but coaches can use the wide-angle lenses to capture more action and more accurately analyze their players. Again, because theyre lightweight, they dont affect performance, so theyre a perfect tool to see from the athletes point of view.

Helmet cameras range in price from inexpensive and quite affordable to very high quality, expensive models, used mostly by TV stations. The top-selling models right now are the Vio POV 1.5 and the Gopro Hero series, which range in price depending on the model. These cameras record to either compact SD cards, or the newer micro SD cards. Theyre really flexible with regards to how you mount them, which means you can use them just about anywhere.

If youre really into documenting your sports and adventures from your point of view, helmet cameras are definitely the way to go. Not only will you be able to re-live your experience, but you can let others see everything the way you do. Plus, if youre really into editing together your own videos, helmet cams give you a different point of view and different angles than a hand-held camera. A helmet cameras flexibility alone will give you many different options, and theyre not a big investment either.
