A Simple Look at a Complex Telephone Number

By Jack Spencer

One of the more frustrating things that we need to deal with is whenever we get a phone call repeatedly and are unaware where it is coming from. There are several things, however, that can tip the hand of the individual who is calling you. One of these is the area code.

Whenever the phone company first started to go with the new numerical system many years ago, they split up various areas of the country into a three digit area code. There were 999 of these codes that were available, although they did not use them all up at that particular time. Each area of the country was assigned to one area code, at times multiple area codes.

As new phones continued to come about, there were additional area codes that were assigned to these various areas of the country. There are times whenever one area code incorporates an entire city but there are other times in which an area code can spend quite a large area of the country. More than likely, an area code is going to take in several smaller towns and perhaps a medium-sized city or two. Another possibility is that more than one area code will be assigned to a particular city if there are enough telephones to warrant it.

Cell phones have also added to the number of area codes that are in use, especially considering their popularity. Some of the area codes that were assigned are done so specifically for use with cellular telephones and they are getting used up rather quickly. Fax machines are also something that are using up area codes quickly as most businesses have at least one dedicated fax line. That is why it is not always a matter of simply looking up the area code to see where the call is coming from.

One thing that the area code can tell you, however, is where the individual is calling from. This is often a region and it may span more than one state in some instances. It is very rare, however, that it will incorporate an extremely large area of the country any longer as there are too many cell phones and land lines and use in order for that to be the case. You can use the area code in order to get a rough idea of where the individual is calling from.

Taking it a little bit further than that, you can also discover who it is that is calling by using the rest of the telephone number from the caller ID. This information is publicly available if it was a landline but you're going to have a difficult time finding the information if it was coming from a cellular phone. Privacy issues have kept many cell phone companies from offering this information publicly.

If you're unable to find the information that you need on the Internet, you might have to resort to paying somebody a small fee in order to find information for you. None of us enjoy paying for this information but it is one of the only guaranteed ways that we have of finding out who is behind the number.
