Get Started With Your First Cell Phone

By Stuart Thompson

The modern cell phone is so much more than a phone now. It used to be that the fancy phones came with a camera and some a few little games to be played on a very small screen. Now though, the most recent cell phones have Internet access and screens where you can actually answer emails and get some work done. People dont buy cell phones only to talk on them anymore.

Expensive mobile phones now can cost upwards of $400 and they come with all sorts of gadgets. The newest ones come with mp3 players, gps capabilities, tons of games, much bigger screens, and of course the Internet. The question is: do people really need all these things or are they paying for things they never use. Just because everyone else is getting the higher end phones, it seems there is more demand caused by peer pressure.

Not all phones are available for all carriers. If you like a particular phone it may be available for only one carrier. This is because phone manufactures sometimes enter into deals with specific carriers to make a phone just for them. That means if you like a certain phone, you may have to use a specific carrier and if it isnt the one you already use, then you would have to switch. Not all phones are like that though, and many can be used with all carriers. Also, some people have found ways to unlock phones so that they can be used with all the carriers even though they were meant to work with one.

Another question is whether the cell phone plans really any different between carriers? Let say you decide to go with AT&T because you like one of their phones and think it's cool. Is their service really any different that all of the others. With competition so stiff, the prices of all of them are very close. If you talk to different people you might find a lot of varying opinions but most of these are just based on personal opinion and not necessarily on fact. The bottom line is that most carriers give you very much the same service for a similar price.

In the end, first time phone buyers have many choices to make. There is a lot of competition between the phone companies and a lot of fierce advertising competition for your business. Each cell phone company hopes to get your business and lock you into a long terms contract that you wont want to break. You must do your share of research first so you both get what you want and not more than you need.
