PABX

By Ben Latsky

PABX stands for Private Automated Branch Exchange and it is a type of PBX system. PBX systems are used to create connections in internal phone systems that are used in organizations, small businesses and in homes as well.

PBX systems are different from key systems because key systems just manually select their own outgoing lines and PBXs are doing it automatically. There are some hybrid systems that are combining the features of both PBX and key systems.

The major advantage of PBX systems was the cost savings on phone calls. As trough time PBX systems gained popularity, they started offering some particular services that were not available in the normal operator network. Here are some examples of the services: Call forwarding, hunt groups and extension dialing. Centrex was a simulated PBX and it was made in 1960's. It provided similar features from the central telephone exchange.

During the 1990's there were two major developments that have led to new types of PBXs. First major development was the large scaled fast spreading of data networks and greatly increased public awareness of packet switching. There were many corporations and companies that needed packet switch networks for data and in that time it was really tempting to use them for phone calls.

Accessibility of the internet made packet switched communication even more attractive for big companies and similar business organizations. These particular factors have led to the development of Voice over IP or VOIP PBX. VOIP system is a cheap solution for telecommunications and companies can earn fortunes by using this particular system for their business.

Earlier PBX systems were really expensive for a private home or a small to medium business usage. At the start of the 90's there was a variety of customer-grade and customer-size PBX systems that were available on the market at that time for a reasonable price. These systems cannot be compared to the big commercial-grade PBX systems that had a lot of features. However, these particular systems had their share of surprisingly good features as well.

Some of the first PBX systems ever to appear were made for analog telephone systems and they were really practical because of their small size. Later with the development of VoIP PBX systems functions have become a good set of additional helpful features for consumer-grade routers and switches.

PABX systems are great thing for your business whether its small or a big one. If you find the features of the PABX systems useful than you should definitely get one.
