The Sony Bravia KDL32W550 0U TV Our Review

By Beth Walton

Sony Bravia television sets have a very good reputation as far as TV's go and the Sony KDL32W550 0U is the latest model in this range. This is a top-of-the range TV with a standard'20x1080p Full HD panel. The "W" series was the first of these to employ this technology.

These feature full LCD sets are very affordable and this particular KDL32W550 0U model has 4 HDMI inputs as well as Applicast, which enables the unit to be connected to the internet. A USB port allows for handling of all types of photo, video or music files and it also comes with an Ethernet jack with which DLNA PC files can be stored, or can be used for the Applicast service.

100Hz Motionflow and the Bravia engine image technology are also featured and apparently this is one of the many features of this feature-rich unit that makes the KDL32W550 0U so good. The fact that retailers can't sell enough of these televisions must mean they are a good buy.

The KDL32W550 0U screen is 32" framed by an attractive black bezel. This surface is shiny, so take care for scratching. The television set is packaged with protecting covers on all scratchable surfaces, so at least it will arrive, delivered in good condition. Glossy surfaces look good and are easy to clean, but if they scratch, they scratch, we have live with this with our mobile phones, but this is par for the course with heavy usage.

This is a compact 32" tv set with a relatively small footprint so if you are short on space, it may be ideal for your use. I think it is a great looking tv, although I have seen some reviewers say that they prefer the looks of the 32E5500 model to the KDL32W550 0U. It is all a matter of taste really and if you think it looks good, you are the one who has to live with it.

Most Sony screens have a "Wega Gate" type menu, but the Sony KDL32W550 0U has done away with this for a more innovative user interface, much the same as the interface used by the Sony Playstation 3. This is a very neat concept and I really like it, however other people may prefer the more traditional menus. The menu is displayed with icons rather than words such as "color", "contrast" etcetera, so they may take some getting used to.

Getting used to the KDL32W550 0U menu may be difficult to get used to for the traditional menu user. Take my father for example, he thinks my TV is so advanced it doesn't need a remote. I just don't tell him that I have hidden it so he can' meddle with my settings. You know what men are like with remote controls!

The video processor on the KDL32W550 0U is really good, perhaps not the best on the market, but certainly more than passable. Most of the people who are going to be using these set tvs, probably wouldn't know the difference, it is only if you know what to look for that you see how effectively it reduces flicker.

In conclusion, if you're looking for a great looking TV at a great price and want it to get admiring glances from your friends, buy the Sony KDL32W550 0U Bravia. You won't go wrong, it's a Sony!
