By Anne

Toll free numbers have become very popular nowadays. Some of us have heard about these numbers in fact, a majority of us are familiar to these numbers, but do we know what they really are? Why do they use these numbers anyway? To some, these are just ordinary telephone numbers that they call if they need help or anything of that sort.

We have heard the phrase "toll free number" almost everywhere. We hear it in television programs, usually reality television shows like American Idol when they tell us to vote for an idol, we hear it in advertisements of different products - telecommunication companies' ads, radio programs, print ads like newspapers and sometimes we still hear it in home shopping networks.

Why are companies using these kinds of numbers? What can we get out of it and what really is a toll free number anyway? Why is it called toll free? Is it really free?

800 numbers are telephone numbers where in the called party pays the cost rather than the caller. The expenses or the costs of the call being made to the called party are more often than not based on aspects like quantity of usage the number has, expenses of the trunk lines to the facility and perhaps a monthly rate or service charges. Due to high demand, area codes like 866, 877, 888 were all added to cater to the end users.

Vanity numbers are also made available for us; these are usually used by companies for branding and direct response. These vanity number or sometimes called mnemonics is a 1-800 telephone number that is plain and easy to memorize and keep in mind for the reason that it spells something and means something like 1-800-BUSINESS or 1-800-CLOTHES.

Many business establishments are making use of identifiable 1-800 vanity numbers both for branding and as a direct response instrument in their marketing strategies like radio, television, print ads etc.)
