Buy iPhone 3G Unlocked

By James Early

Not every place on Earth penalizes you when you buy an unlocked iPhone 3G. In Hong Kong, doing this is perfectly within the bounds of the law. In fact, in that region, every cell phone that you buy, including the iPhone 3G, is unlocked. This means that if you purchase a cell phone in Hong Kong you will be free to use any local carrier?s network.

The principle behind an unlocked cell phone

First of all, what is an unlocked iPhone 3G, or an unlocked cell phone for that matter? A locked cell phone is one wherein you can only insert one type of SIM card; the one connected to exactly the same carrier as the cell phone. If you insert another SIM card, you won?t get any signal.

This kind of arrangement is common in almost every part of the world that uses cell phones. In the US, an iPhone that you buy from AT&T can only be used in the AT&T network. But if you buy an unlocked iPhone 3G, you?ll be able to insert a SIM from another carrier and use the phone on its network.

Within the law

In Hong Kong, where you can find a vast collection of cell phones, the phones that you buy are unlocked by default. Say that again? No really, if you buy an iPhone 3G in Hong Kong, you?d be able to use it on any network. Now, we?re not talking about bootleg versions. On the contrary, Apple itself has released unlocked iPhone 3G phones there.

The catch

Of course, while this all sounds so fine and dandy, it doesn?t come without a price ? literally. If you buy an unlocked iPhone 3G in Hong Kong, it is going to cost you more than if you bought it in the US, and that doesn?t yet include your fare to get there. You see, when you buy a phone in the US, the phones are cheaper because the carriers pay for that extra price in order for the potential subscriber to be enticed into locking in to their network.

Buy an unlocked iPhone 3G

When you buy an unlocked 3G iPhone at a relatively higher price, you?re actually paying for the cost of freedom; the freedom to choose your own phone and the freedom to select your preferred network.
