Checking for Area Codes on the Net

By Jack Spencer

Getting a telephone number from an area code that you don't recognize can be a rather frustrating situation. It happens to me quite frequently and at times, there may be no part of the number that I recognize at all. Whenever I find that I am unable to identify the number who was calling, there are several things that I do which can help to pin down the information.

I have to admit, it is very rare that I ever get calls from somebody that I don't know so the first thing that I begin to think about is that somebody I am familiar with is out of the area and needs my help in some way or another. As luck would have it, the majority of these numbers that I am unfamiliar with will not leave a message so it is up to me to do a little bit of looking for my own.

Many people would consider area codes to be somewhat of a mystery, they are not all that difficult to understand once you have a basic grasp of them. The fact of the matter is, you can often find this information by looking at a single webpage which contains all of the area codes listed in order. It can give you a lot of details about the person that is behind the number, how is that the case?

When area codes were assigned to various parts of the country, they were done so in order to take up a specific area of it. That is the reason why they are called "area" codes. The three digit number identifies a particular area where the call is originating from. Knowing this piece of information can help you to unravel the mystery.

Once you're able to find the page which has the information on that particular area, you are going to see a number of different pieces of information about the code itself. The first information is the state or states in which the call is originating from. Often, this is enough to spark your memory and to give you an idea of who it was that might be calling.

There are additional details that are available about the area code which are also on the webpage. At times, the entire database of numbers that incorporates one of these area codes may exist within a single, large city. As a matter of fact, a large city may have a number of different area codes that are specifically assigned to it. And more outlying areas, however, you may end up with an area code that spans a large area, such as a number of counties or perhaps one or two towns.

If you have this information and you are still not sure of who it is that is calling, you can take the next step and do a reverse telephone lookup for that particular number. The unfortunate thing is that most cellular telephones are not going to give you the data in a publicly available form. Since most people are currently using cell phones in order to make phone calls, this happens more often than not.

Along with these area code lookup websites, there are also websites which help you to do a reverse line lookup and get specific information about the caller. Even if this information is hidden from the public, it is available to the individuals who are running the services. The best part about it is, you will be able to get the information that you need quickly.
