With the N97 it has a touch screen unlike the N96 and has a better resolution standard at 360 x 640, compared to the 240 x 320. The N97 also has a slide out Qwerty Keyboard, along with function specific keys, unlike the N96. In addition the N97 has the capability to use the WCDMA bands 1900 and 850, which are not included in the original frequency bands that include GSM 1800, 1900, 850, 900 and WCDMA 2100 and 900 on the N96.

The Nokia N96 has a dual CPU while the Nokia N97 has a single CPU. The Nokia N97 has an additional light sensor, Files on OVI, Flight Mode, Magnetometer Sensor, Nokia Music Store, Nokia Maps 2. 0, Pict bridge, Ovi Store, Proximity Sensor, and Share on OVI.

Maximum user storage amounts to an upgradeable 16 GB on the N96, whereas the N97 comes with 32 GB on deck. Both can use memory cards, however the N96 can only use up to 8GB and the N97 can use twice that. The N97 also has the ability to charge on USB, which is not an option for the N96.
