Move Songs directly from iTunes to your Blackberry Pearl

By Paul Herrington

When my wife got her brand new Blackberry Pearl, she couldn't wait to transfer her favorite songs from iTunes onto her phone. Since I had been down this road already, I warned her about the trouble I had with Roxio Media Manager. It was slow and didn't do a very good job of getting my songs onto my Blackberry Pearl with all the artist, song and album information still there. I had already written an article about doing this without Roxio.

I quickly told my wife how to do it the easy way using Windows Explorer instead of Roxio. Somehow I didn't communicate something or she didn't hear right. The good news is, because of this, she made a great little discovery that I had no idea was possible. I assume most other Blackberry Pearl owners don't know either.

You Can Go From iTunes to Your Blackberry Pearl in One Easy Step.

I thought I had this whole songs transfering thing all figured out. Open two Explorer windows, one with the Blackberry Pearl directory and one with my iTunes music directory. I would then drag files from one window to the other. That's not what my wife was doing. She opened iTunes and then a single Explorer window and simply dragged music from iTunes straight into the Blackberry Pearl folder.

One of the things I love about iTunes is it's search ability. It doesn't take much to narrow down the music listed to exactly what you want. Then it's a simple matter of selecting all of the media listed and dragging them over to the Blackberry Pearl folder.

If you want to make things even easier for yourself, just create a new playlist in iTunes and call it something like "Blackberry Pearl". Now, as you're browsing through iTunes, just drag any songs you find that you'd like on your Pearl right into this playlist. It will be easy to find the next time you sync your Blackberry Pearl. Simply click on the playlist and drag the music from the main window over to your phone. Remember, you'll have to select all the songs and not the single playlist. Windows will automatically warn you before moving media over that already exist on your phone. Just tell it "no to all" when it asks if you want to replace the files. That's it, you just did a one-way sync.

I never realized you could do this. It's so simple and it will even keep all of your Artist, Album and Genre information in tact. Again, I tried to grab a playlist and move that over, but it won't work. You'll still have to create those on your Blackberry Pearl once you've uploaded your media, but its very simple.

So, I've humbly given my wife all the credit for this little discovery. I hope it makes things easier for you. I know it has for both of us. As I move over my songs I'm always reminded that my non-technical wife taught me this little shortcut.
