Keeping your Blackberry Pearl running at optimum speeds, you'll need to be careful your internal memory doesn't get bogged down with all sorts of garbage. If it's not watched closely, it will get full quickly and your phone will start to bog down. I'm going to talk about the biggest issues and how to manage them.
It's important to know how much memory is available on your Pearl. This can be done quickly by following these steps:
1. Select the little icon that mostly like looks like a wrench. This is the options icon.
2. Scroll to status and click.
3. FILE TOTAL lists the absolute capacity of your phones memory.
4. File Free is the amount of memory free at this time.
The bigger the number listed under FILE FREE, the more memory you have available and the faster your phone will run.
The quickest and easiest thing to do is delete as much as you can from your inbox. Email can build up quickly, especially if you're syncing with several addresses. Think twice before saving messages.
Content Compression
I've had content compression active since I first brought my phone home, so I don't know how much memory this will open up. If you don't have it activated, do it now and you'll open up more memory quickly.
1. With the main screen open you'll see all of your icons on one screen (not the home screen).
2. Find the wrench icon and click on it.
3. Use the pearl to move down to "SECURITY OPTIONS" and press the pearl button.
4. Scroll to and click on General Settings.
5. Scroll down to Content Compression.
6. If ENABLED is not selected, do so now.
7. Press the Blackberry Button (7 dots left of the pearl).
8. Now choose SAVE.
Content compression is now activated on your phone. From now on your movies, pictures, music, emails and calendar items will take up a lot less room on your phone. This will increase the amount of memory you have available.
Removing Unused Programs
I think I've played Brick Breaker once while in the doctors office. It was fun, but it's not worth the memory it eats up. I deleted it. I also recommend going through all of the applications installed and removing those you rarely or never use.
1. From your HOME screen, press the "Blackberry Button". This should give you a window with all of the icons on it.
2. Scroll to and click on options (looks like a wrench).
3. Scroll to and click on Advanced Options.
4. Highlight and select Applications. It may take a few seconds to build the list of apps.
5. Choose any applications you don't think you'll need.
6. Click on the little button just to the left of the pearl. It should have 7 little dots on it.
7. Select DELETE and press the pearl.
8. Repeat this process with the other applications you want to remove.
NOTICE: You may be asked to reboot your Pearl before the deletion process is completed.
Once you've completed these steps, you'll certainly notice how much faster your Pearl is running. Applications should open up much faster. If they don't there are a number of other steps you can take that I'll explore later.
