GPS Systems

By Teresa Burrows

These days Satellite navigation systems are the norm. Used correctly these units can direct you to where you want to go without getting lost, avoiding traffic hold ups and all with a minimum of fuss. Sometimes we can be weary of new gadgets but every now and then one comes out that cannot be pushed aside. The Satellite Navigation Systems falls into that category and the youth of today has embraced this technology whole heartedly, while the rest of us are taking things a little slower but now just about all of us know about satellite navigation and a large percentage of us are using this technology. For those who are still in no man's land on these systems, here is a little information.

You will also know the Satellite Navigation System as GPS (Global Positioning Systems). They are small units either built in or mobile for cars, boats, airoplanes or any vehicle that travels. The GPS will direct you to your desired destination using a database of maps and satellite reference. These systems are highly sophisticated and can show you the most direct route to your desired location, or give you a choice so that you can choose the route. Normally the quickest route will be the default setting. The software in many units will show you traffic lights and fixed speed cameras, "a very handy tool". It may also give live updates on traffic trouble spots that may slow your journey and a solution to avoid it. GPS units have an audio program that speaks to you in a voice of your choice and will give verbal instructions as you drive.

As demand grows for this technology the companies manufacturing Satellite Navigation Systems spend a lot of time and resources on new models. At times it may seem like as soon as you purchase a unit the next model is released and it will do more. The price has reduced as they refine the technology and with competition in the market place this is good for us. Now everyone can have a GPS. Planning your holiday or business trip only involves entering your desired destinations into your GPS before you leave home, reducing the stress of driving.

There are plenty of systems on the market but three brands stand out and each brand has many models to choose from. TomTom, Garmin and Magellan are very highly rated and each have basic units at very reasonable prices to more elaborated models with a price to match it. All depends on your budget and your requirements. We are lucky these days we can do our research online before purchasing, seeking out forums on the brands and seeing what other people think. It is easy to be swept up in technical jargon from sales people, so know what you want the unit to do, how much you are willing to pay and don't be convinced to buy something that will get you to the moon, because you will not use it.

Satellite Navigation Systems make great gifts for friends and family. So the next time you rent a car make sure that you hire a GPS with the vehicle. Most car hire companies have them available for a very reasonable price or from as little as $10 per day.
