About Satellite Radio

By Lake Dell

Satellite radio is considered by many to be the greatest thing to happen to broadcasting since the FM band was created.

Because satellite radio is only available through a paid subscription from a service provider company, it is also referred to as pay-radio or subscription radio.

Not unlike cable television, satellite radio provides a great variance in the programs that are made available; many programs not available to FM or AM radio.

The delivery of the radio programs is done through satellites; hence the name. The signals are initiated by stations on Earth and redirected by satellites to subscribers.

In comparison to the traditional radio antennas, satellite redirection allows the signals to be broadcasted to a much larger area.

Currently, satellite radio is available all across the continental United States and it is growing worldwide thanks to larger service providers such as WorldSpace , Sirius and XM Radio. Most parts of Europe and Asia are now enjoying satellite radio.

The radio signal you receive using satellite radio is digital, which means that it is always clear and static-free, which is one of the great advantages of satellite radio.

Another great thing about satellite radio is that it is almost completely commercial-free.

All you need to start listening to satellite radio is the actual satellite radio unit, a satellite radio antenna which is almost always included in the unit, and, of course, a subscription to a service provider.

The radio signals offered by different satellite radio companies are proprietary, which means that you will need different hardware for receiving, decoding and playback, depending on your subscription.

Each satellite radio receiver has its own serial number called Radio ID. When you get your subscription, you will also get an activation code for your receiver.

The data transmitted by satellite radio also contains information about the programs including artist name, song title, and the name of the channel; another advantage to satellite radio.

That kind of information is very useful for listeners in terms of aiding in deciding which program to listen to.

Satellite radio doesn't only offer music, it also offers plenty of sports programs, educational shows, and the news.

Every year, satellite radio is being enjoyed by more and more subscribers. This is due to the many advantages satellite radio has over traditional radio such as theme programs and exceptional quality of sound.
