If You Have Company Vehicles On The Road, You Need GPS Vehicle Tracking

By Todd Cavanaugh

Are you confused by seemingly excessive vehicle costs? Are you having difficulty explaining why it costs 40% more to operate a specific company car than it costs to operate your own personal vehicle? It might be time to take control of this significant portion of your company's operating expense. The way to take charge is with GPS vehicle tracking.

Do you recall the news reports a few years ago when UPS decided to have all of their drivers plan their routes and make their deliveries without making left turns? They did some analysis and found that left turns were burning fuel, time and money. How did they perform the analysis? They used GPS vehicle tracking to reduce costs.

GPS vehicle tracking allowed the company to monitor where the trucks were at any given time. They were able to extract reports showing the average wait time to make right turns and to make left turns. They were also able to analyze the amount of extra fuel required to make left turns (due to waiting for traffic to clear or for lights to change). They were also able to convert their findings to dollars lost. They determined that making left turns was simply too expensive.

The city of Dyersburg, TN needed to find a way to cut costs for city services. Based on an educated guess, they installed GPS vehicle tracking devices in all city vehicles. After a period of data gathering from the devices, city officials were able to document such things as (1) use of city vehicles for personal business, (2) drivers who clocked more than 120 miles in a day without making a single stop - except for breaks and meals, (3) drivers who were taking vehicles out of the city, (4) drivers who were picking up a small amount of tree limbs and cuttings and immediately going to the dump before picking up the next load.

These are simply two well-publicized examples of the benefits companies derive from GPS vehicle tracking. Other kinds of data provided by these systems could include:

- speeding

- unsafe or inefficient driving habits.

- identification of more efficient routes

- excessive idle time.

- ability to identify and re-route the closest person when there is an urgent need.

- time spent at each location.

This and other information tracked and fed into a GPS vehicle tracking central analysis center becomes a new management tool for correcting bad habits, identifying potential problems, providing alternative options, and becoming more responsive to customer needs and frustrations. It also offers the ability to provide warning systems, to notify drivers of traffic problems and identify alternate routes. The information provided to a company by a GPS vehicle tracking system can be of infinite value to any business with any kind of vehicles on the road.

GPS vehicle tracking systems can help you protect and extend the life of your vehicles by helping drivers exercise safer and more efficient driving habits. When data from the tracking devices is analyzed over time, it will identify waste, lax employee performance, unauthorized use of vehicles, and identify numerous ways to become more efficient. These are only a few of the ways a GPS vehicle tracking system can provide the benefits of consistent and trustworthy data that can help you cut costs, increase efficiency and productivity, and increase profits.

With GPS vehicle tracking your company can streamline operations, increase customer satisfaction, reduce costs, and increase profits by facilitating the kinds of savings that directly and proportionately improve your bottom line. Because GPS vehicle tracking is inexpensive, you will probably see instant benefits when the devices are installed in your company vehicles.
