Why Is Customer Service So Important?

By Frances Callaghan Nicholls

High quality customer care is of utmost importance in any organisation in order for it to be prosperous. Whatever the situation, whether it is a face to face customer enquiry or a telephone complaint, excellent customer service is a must if you want your company to keep pulling business in.

So what is customer service and how can you make your better? Well, any part of your business that a customer can see can be seen as customer service because people will judge your company based on anything they see, even if it is not related to your product or service.

Whether a person realises it or not, they tend to make their minds up about things in the first minute or so of encountering them, particularly companies that they are considering giving money to in exchange for a service. Everything they see and feel when they're in there will make up their minds prejudgment, from the look of a room to the behaviour of any visible members of staff.

So you should take time to make sure that everything a customer sees gives the impression of a well-oiled business machine with lots of expertise in your field, particularly the first thing customers will see.

Of course, this is all before the customer has even spoken with your staff which can almost be treated as the make or break point. Before sending new members of staff out onto the floor you should ensure that they are competent enough to answer any question that a customer could ask them in a professional and polite manner.

The telephone manner of your staff is extremely important to the satisfaction of your customers, especially if a telephone conversation is the first contact a customer has with your company. This is because people instinctively try to make a decision about whether something is good or bad as quickly as possible, and so if a member of staff is speaking on the phone in a lazy, cant be bothered sort of way, the customer will immediately switch off to anything your business could offer them and they will most likely go somewhere else. In essence, customer service is about ensuring that the first contact any customer has with your business gives them the impression of professionalism and efficiency, and then every contact thereafter follows suit.
