Unified Communication Headsets The Way Forward For Plantronics

By Jon Hunter

Telecoms giant Plantronics has declared its decision that its future is in business of unified communications, with its corded and wireless headsets. Proving that it is serious about this claim it sold Audio Entertainment Group to the firm Prophet equity for $18 million dollars recently.

Market analysis shows Plantronics has good reason to focus on the unified communications market. Sales for the worldwide unified communications headsets grew by close to 300 percent in 2008, according to Frost & Sullivan. The analyst firm also has forecast a compound annual growth rate of 72 percent for the market from 2008 to 2014.

"Unified communications represent the greatest revenue and profit opportunity in the company's history" declares Ken Kannappan the Plantronics' CEO and president being upbeat about Plantronics preferred strategy.

Demonstrating its commitment to the Unified Communications space Plantronics released the Savi Series in March 2009, which it claimed was then the industry's first suite of Unified Communications wireless headset systems which integrated multiple devices and applications.

The Savi Series features two wireless headset systems: Savi Go and Savi Office. The Savi Office range caters for office workers and provides a single wireless headset for mixing desk phone calls with PC audio and softphone calls. The Savi Go range caters for mobile professionals who need a simple-to-use wireless headset to connect to PC and mobile phone communications. Both products have variants that support UC offerings from leading providers.

"Plantronics is participating in numerous UC pilot projects, helping IT departments increase adoption by understanding end-user needs and preferences," said Chuck Yort, vice president and general manager, B2B Solutions at Plantronics, in a statement. "Experience is teaching us that the last leg of UC - how well end users interface with devices - is just as critical as the infrastructure. Our new Savi products are reliable, minimise risk and spur adoption for IT decision makers, and deliver great audio, comfort and ease of use for end users.
