Parental Advisory - Teen Cell Phones Can Mean Time Behind Bars

Many parents may have not even heard of it yet. A new trend in teen cell phone use that can end up with your teen being incarcerated. The new trend that is growing Nationwide is appropriately named sexting.

When some performs the act of sexting they are performing the newest form of phone sex. Sexting uses text messages with instant photo sharing from a cell phone. This means explicit pictures can be taken and shared instantly with someone else right over their cell phone. Almost every cell phone now comes with a camera and text capabilities so your teen more than likely is already using the technology to communicate from their cell phones.

While it could be argued that the activity of sexting is a part of growing up and more an issue of teenage hormones, the law is starting to take a whole different stance on the practice.

Sexting can be a dangerous practice and has already lead to many sexual assault cases. Law enforcement has been struggling with dealing with the victims and what to do about it. While sexual predators have been the main focus in the past, they are now eying the teens that engage in sexting.

Due to laws already in place to battle child pornography and it's transmission over the Internet, teenagers are now being charged with distribution of child pornography. This means if your teen sends an image of themselves that is inappropriate over the Internet, even a teen their own age, they can be charged with distributing of child pornography.

As you can easily see, the world we live in is changing as technology develops. As a parent, it is more crucial than ever to start talking with your teenager about sex and responsible use of their cellular phones. Failing to work on your parenting skills could mean the difference between your teenager's freedom or even their life.

You may not be able to control your teen with all the sharing and talking about the subject. If your teen is a rebellious one, there are other options you can put in place to protect them from themselves. One best option is to entirely disable their cell phone Internet access so that they cannot send images from their phone. This will also disable their ability to receive messages as well. This won't make your teen happy and they may still be just as capable of performing the same actions from a computer, so this is only one possible option of many.
