Know The Latest Features Of Nokia N96

By Michael Rolfe

The Nokia N96 is an evolution of the all-conquering Nokia N95, retaining its kitchen-sink approach to features while improving build quality and style. It's a tough act to follow however, and the N96 has got to be pretty special to lure dedicated N95'ers away from their beloved handset. So has Nokia succeeded? Of course they have! Luckily for us, the N96 is just as much a range-topping flagship as its predecessor. As the N96 is a slider phone, the 2.8" screen dominates the front panel. With a resolution of 240x320 and capable of displaying 16 million colors, it looks superb in the majority of situations. The N96 runs the Symbian S60 9.3 operating system with the excellent Feature Pack 2 installed, bringing with it very welcome upgrades to performance and stability, plus a wealth of visual tweaks and the very handy Active Standby screen.

The talk time is up to 190 minutes for WCDMA; 260 minutes for GSM; stand by time is up to 320 hours for WCDMA; 320 hours for GSM and the video captures are for 215 minutes. The video call can last up to 280 minutes; and the music play back is for 24 hours in an offline mode; and the web browsing is allowed up to 3 hours and one can hear the FM radio for up to 14 hours. The operation times may vary completely depending on the radio access technology used and it has a TFT color display which can display up to 16 million colors with a wide 160 degree viewing angle. To optimize the display brightness and power consumption, the ambient light detector can be used. The operating system is specified as Symbian OS; and the user interface is S60 3rd Edition, with a feature pack of 2 and with C++ and Java SDKs.

N96 is in fact the first Nokia handset that ships with a car charger and it's a neat accessory we appreciate. The pre bundled hands free is a two-piece combo, which means you can easily swap the provided headset without sacrificing the remote control. Nokia N96 stands at 103 x 55 x 18 mm, totaling a volume of 92 cc. This is slightly longer and a tad slimmer than Nokia N95 8GB. Samsung i8510 INNOV8 has similar size but is the heaviest of the three. It takes quite a big pocket to stash Nokia N96 and the weight of 125g won't let you forget it's there.

Underneath the screen is the usual array of call buttons and softkeys, plus the introduction of a Navi-wheel, which works by moving your finger around the edge of the D-pad in order to move the onscreen cursor.

Of course, this wouldn't be an N-series phone without all the connectivity options you could want and unsurprisingly, it's all here, from 3G with HSDPA support to Wi-Fi and A2DP Bluetooth. The media side is well covered too, with the usual music and video player, FM RDS radio, a 3.5mm jack plug and TV-out, plus a DVB-H tuner. It even has a little flip down stand for resting the N96 on your desk and watching the latest iPlayer downloads!

For a superb music experience, the Nokia N96 features media keys, a 3.5 mm headphone connector and built-in 3D stereo speakers. The Nokia Maps application offers richer maps with urban details and satellite views and has upgrade options such as City Guides, turn-by-turn pedestrian mode and voice-guided car navigation.
