Creating Your Own iPhone Ringtones

Say goodbye to having to pay iTunes 99 cents to get ringtones for your iPhone. This is a thing of the past. Today, you can use Apples GarageBand, to create your own iPhone ringtones. You can also use programs designed for creating ringtones from your favorite media files.

iPhone Ringtones can come from a variety of places. Movies. Music files. Also, you can record sounds from your daily life. Like your child saying, "Daddy, your phone is ringing." There are endless options for creative ringtones.

Customized iPhone ringtones seems to be the big thing for iPhone users. Of course everyone knows how hot iPhones are. So many users want to add contact-customized ringtones. If a specific contact calls, a ringtone set for that contact will ring. It's pretty awesome.

Matching a contact with a ringtone is easier than you'd think. If your dad is a country music fan, you can use his favorite Garth Brooks tune as a ringtone. If your brother-in-law loves football, create a ringtone that's the NFL theme song. If your sister and family are argumentative, use the Married with Childred theme song. Go wild.

There are two ways to create ringtones for your iPhone. I call this the hard way. With it you can use Apples GarageBand to make your own ringtone.

1) Launch both iTunes and GarageBand.

2) Highlight the song you want to create a ringtone from in iTunes.

3) Within your GarageBand, select "File", then "New".

4) A timeline of a single track is shown in GarageBand. You'll want to delete this track. To accomplish this, select the track and click "Delete Track" from the "Track" menu at the top of GarageBand.

5) Click the music file you want within iTunes and drag it into GarageBand. You'll see it's quickly imported.

6) Scroll thru the song in GarageBand. Then select the 30 second segment you want to be your new iPhone ringtone.

7) We're going to remove the sections of the music before and after the clip we've selected. Click the track and this will select it. Click Split under "Edit" at the top menu. This will break the file from the point where your mouse is. Then click on the portion of the file you want to delete. Delete it. And repeat for the end of the ringtone.

9) Drag the beginning of the ringtone all the way to the left side of the track timeline.

10) About a half-second or so into the beginning of the track, click the volume line to create an end point. Next, click and drag the beginning of the volume line down to zero volume.

11) Repeat this step for the end of the ringtone.

12) Now preview it and see if you like how it sounds. If you do, save it.

13) To make sure that the song repeats as your phone rings, click on the button to turn the cycle region on and off (at the bottom of the GarageBand window). It is the button on the far right that looks like a set of arrows.

14) Then a yellow line will appear just above the track. Using your mouse, click and yank the right side of the line. It should go all throughout your ringtone. Then save it again.

15) Now send the file to iTunes. To do this, click "Share", then "Send Ringtone to iTunes." Instantly it's converted and sent to iTunes.

16) Then sync your iPhone!
